The Green Ideas Challenge Returns!

ACTion Alexandria is once again hosting the Green Ideas Challenge, starting on Wednesday, June 1. For the fourth year, ACTion is asking local nonprofits and community members, working in partnerships with local organizations, to submit their ideas for making Alexandria an even greener, more sustainable place to live, work and visit.

All submitted ideas will be reviewed by a panel of judges, and winning ideas will receive up to $2,000 each to be turned into reality. Through a generous grant from The Dominion Foundation, a total of $5,000 will be awarded.

Ideas should be neighborhood focused and additional consideration will be given to ideas which incorporate or involve children and youth. The goal of the Green Ideas Challenge is to engage the community in problem solving and collective action to improve the local environment through ACTion's innovative, online platform.

Last year's winning ideas included teaching a series of art and science classes for kindergarteners at Cora Kelly School, led by UpCycle Creative Reuse Center, installing signs and a mural illustrating the importance of the water cycle at Mount Vernon Community School, and constructing an outdoor classroom and children's garden at Jefferson-Houston School.

Entries for this year's Green Ideas Challenge will be accepted until Sunday, June 26. After the submission deadline, community members may continue to vote for their favorite ideas on the Green Ideas Challenge page until June 30.

On Friday, May 6, Spring2ACTion participants, sponsors and volunteers gathered for a celebration of the $1,337,493 raised for 153 nonprofits from 8,316 generous individuals on April 20. After enjoying donuts from Sugar Shack Alexandria, more than $45,000 in prizes were awarded to this year's top winners.

My name is Shante Johnson, and I am a Northern Virginia SCAN volunteer. Currently, we are recruiting for the Alexandria-Arlington CASA. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. Children of color are disproportionately represented in the child welfare system. Currently, there are not enough African-American CASA Volunteers to advocate on behalf of African-American children. Research has shown that children identify with people who look like them.. You can make the difference between whether he or she stays in school or ends up in jail. And if you think you are not qualified to volunteer, don’t worry. CASA will train you so that you will be able to help these childrenFor example, in Alexandria, approximately 30 percent of all children are African-American, but close to 60 percent of children to whom CASA is appointed are African-American. In Arlington, approximately 12 percent of children are African-American, but almost 30 percent of the children to whom CASA is appointed are African-American.SCAN's next CASA Volunteer Training sessions will begin in March. The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) wants to hear from the greater community about priorities for improving WMATA’s transit operations and customer service. Recognizing Metro’s critical role in the region’s economy and quality of life, NVTC is sponsoring two regional forums. Hands-on activities, handheld polling and small group discussion will allow the public to prioritize issues and pinpoint solutions that will help the transit agency address challenges pertaining to affordability, service reliability, and safety.

The forums are scheduled for Arlington and Fairfax counties:

December 16: Wakefield High School Cafeteria, Door #1, off main parking lot, 1325 South Dinwiddie St., Arlington, VA, 7-9pm

December 17: Wiehle-Reston East Metrorail Station, North Exit, 11389 Reston Station Blvd., Plaza Level, Reston, VA, 6-8pm

Upon arriving, individuals will participate in an activity designed to visually rank potential improvements within the WMATA system. Handheld polling devices will then capture the service qualities of greatest importance to attendees. Virginia members of the WMATA Board of Directors and WMATA General Manager/CEO Paul Wiedefeld will provide an overview of the transit agency’s priorities. Everyone in attendance will be invited to participate in roundtable discussions, where they will have the opportunity to share comments and suggestions to help WMATA improve the quality of its operations and customer service. Wiedefeld will sit in on the roundtables to better understand the priorities of those who ride Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess.

City of Alexandria Launches New Performance Reports and Community Survey

Alexandria City Manager Mark B. Jinks has announced the timeline for several initiatives intended to continue greater transparency and accountability for City government programs. These efforts include the publication of performance reports for each program, a community survey to gauge resident satisfaction and priorities, and the development of an interactive performance dashboard.

"A key goal of City government is to provide accountable, responsible, and well-managed services to our customers," said Jinks. "These new initiatives will help us document what is going well and identify opportunities for improvement."

Individual performance reports for each City program are now available at www.alexandriava.gov/Performance. The reports include a selection of indicators used by managers to determine whether the program is meeting its goals. The reports will be expanded over time to include additional measures and background information, and will be transitioned to an interactive dashboard of indicators. The reports are intended as a starting point for the publication of performance data, and the public is encouraged to provide feedback.

In order to collect additional data on residents’ satisfaction with services and priorities, the City will conduct a community service beginning in December 2015 and concluding in Spring 2016. The survey, developed in conjunction with the National Research Center and the International City and County Managers’ Association (ICMA), will include both standardized questions to allow comparison to national benchmarks, and questions specific to Alexandria needs. Results will be used to guide the City’s budget process, as well as to provide additional indicators for performance reports.

The community survey will be distributed to a random, representative sample of Alexandria residents by mail. Respondents will have the option to return the survey by mail or complete it online. A random sample approach will ensure that the survey is completed by a diverse group of residents across Alexandria.

Position Summary: The Project Manager will lead the development and implementation of an ongoing effort to provide comprehensive early care and education throughout the City of Alexandria, Virginia. The Director will be responsible for:

Implementing initial strategies of The Common Agenda
Guiding the initiative's ongoing strategy development
Serving as the initiative's organizational ambassador and building public will
Drawing connections across all key initiatives

The Project Manager will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including, but not limited to, organizations such as early care and education service providers, Alexandria City Council, Alexandria City Public Schools, Department of Community and Human Services, private funders, the Alexandria Health Department, and service providers.

City of Alexandria's Early Care and Education Initiative Overview

Across the City of Alexandria, individuals and organizations work together to improve the city's early care and education system so its children, from pre-natal through 3rd grade, have access to a high-quality, comprehensive system of educational, health, socio-emotional, family, and community supports so that every child in the community thrives. The intent is to create meaningful and sustained impact with broad community buy-in.

This initiative is part of a larger Children & Youth Master Plan (CYMP), which was approved in the summer of 2014 by the Alexandria City Council and the Alexandria City Public Schools School Board. The purpose of the CYMP is to enable better outcomes for children, youth, and families by providing a common agenda for allocation of resources and actions.

While the CYMP is focused on the entire spectrum of children and youth needs from birth to age 21, achieving the goals laid out in the CYMP will require breaking the work down into more manageable pieces. In that spirit, an Early Care & Education Work Group ("the Work Group") has been meeting regularly over the past two years to focus exclusively on education strategy as well as educating and engaging the community about the importance of investing in early childhood services, sharing best practices, and highlighting promising research in the field.

The Project Manager will execute key "backbone" functions of this initiative. The overarching purpose of this role is to provide the connective tissue among the following partners involved in the initiative:

The Early Care & Education Work Group, which is comprised of Alexandria leaders who help to guide the vision and overall strategies of the initiative
Task Forces, which will be created in order to implement specific dimensions of the strategy, under the oversight of the Work Group. The task forces will be comprised of field practitioners who have relevant expertise within the specific task force focus
Community partners, who are various government agencies and community members and organizations that will be critical to implementing the initiative's strategies

Coordinate with other Project Managers and other key leaders implementing the CYMP

Director Responsibilities

The role of the Director is to perform the following functions:

Provide strategic leadership
Demonstrate early care and education knowledge and passion for child and family outcomes
Build relationships with critical community partners
Identify data to drive decision making
Manage meeting and implementation plans
Build internal infrastructure
Develop and manage the initiative's financial sustainability plan

Ideal Experience, Education, and Traits

5-7 years of experience in a community nonprofit organization, goverment agency, or similar organization, of which 2-3 years should be at a senior or executive level
Demonstrated success leading teams to achieve strategic goals
Experience in the field of early care and education key issues and actors strongly preferred
Dedication to improving outcomes for children and families
Ability to think and solve problems at a systems level, as opposed to a program or organizational delivery level (e.g., identify strategies focused on increasing coordination or filling gaps in service)
Experience fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Manage multiple priorities in a context of change and ambiguity and an ability to adapt to changing needs or momentum
Ability to work independently, exercise appropriate action, and good business judgment
Master's degree preferred

Organizational Background

The Project Manager will report to the Early Care & Education Project Steering Group. The Project Manager will be a consultant with ACT for Alexandria serving as the fiscal agent.
This position is funded through a partnership of several different funders.
Salary will be commensurate with experience.
