Thanks for One Month of Success
When we launched the new ACTion Alexandria on the evening of February 7th, we didn’t really know what to expect. We knew what we’d like to see happen, but hoping for something and seeing your expectations exceeded week after week are two very different things.
Thanks to the support of this community, our first month has been a success. During the past four weeks you have:
- Raised $1495 for milk and after school snacks for children living at the Carpenter’s Shelter. The Carpenter’s Shelter received $995 in donations and a $500 match from action sponsor the Running Brooke Fund. Our original goal was to raise $500. You can read more about this action in this WUSA9's story about ACTion Alexandria.
- Donated 320 single servings of pediatric electrolyte solution to treat children sick with diarrhea and/or vomiting at the Arlandria Health Center for Pediatrics managed by Alexandria Neighborhood Health Services, Inc. Our original goal was 160 single servings.
- Dropped off 706 protein-rich, nonperishable food items at ALIVE! that helped to feed 2,476 people struggling with hunger in Alexandria. Thanks to local business Food Matters for showing community leadership and becoming our first corporate sponsor.
- Donated 2,400 hundred diapers to Community Lodgings to help homeless families struggling to transition to independence. Our original goal was 640 diapers. We didn’t just exceed this goal, we almost quadrupled it! Thanks to Give Back Alexandria for their $300 sponsorship!
- Voted in our Quality of Life Indicators Challenge to help determine how we measure what matters most to residents of Alexandria. The Quality of Life Indicators Challenge continues until April 1st so there’s still time for you to make your voice heard and vote!
You are the people who’ve made this happen. If there were any doubts that ACTion Alexandria would work, you've removed them. As you community manager, I can’t tell you how gratifying it is to see our project succeed. Thank you so much for pitching in and helping us build a better community!
Remember, share the news that you are a philanthropist!

Come help kick off inauguration weekend with a celebration to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and volunteer! On Saturday, January 19th, hundreds of volunteers will assist nonprofit agencies providing services to people in need as well as provide educational activities to children and youth. In Alexandria, volunteers are needed to assist children and teenagers creating a story book. Volunteers are needed for set up, registration, implementing arts and crafts projects, clean up, and much more. Adult volunteers are needed to facilitate discussion groups with a smaller group of children. Interested adults should contact Jason Ellis at
On Tuesday September 4th, the transformation of one of Community Lodgings’ five apartment buildings will begin – a full-fledged renovation! When I took over as Executive Director seven years ago, I set a long-term goal to ensure all our families lived in safe, comfortable homes. Over the years, out of sheer financial necessity, I was forced to take a “band-aid” approach to building repairs. Seven years later, with help from HomeAid Northern Virginia, Pulte Homes and the City of Alexandria, our long-term goal becomes reality.
