Hopkins House – A Center for Children and Their Families is a 501(c)3 private, non-profit organization. In 1939 a social safety net program was eliminated that sponsored a social services day nursery that provided care for the children of African-American working parents in the then racially segregated Alexandria.

Kids Helping Kids is an effort by young people in Alexandria to help youth in Alexandria. Founded in 2002, this non-profit group is made up of about a dozen teens ages 13-18. These teens are the backbone of the organization, recruiting youth volunteer, spreading awareness of the event, gathering sponsors to donate supplies and the precise logistics of the event.

Thanks to your amazing holiday-inspired community spirit, we helped raise a total of $2,735 for Community Partners for Children's Holiday Donation Drive. This year, the need was greater than ever with more than 350 families needing assistance through the City's Holiday Sharing Program.

The Arlandria community has been planning for change longer than any other neighborhood in Alexandria. We are now a decade into implementation of theArlandria Revitalization Plan, the result of the City and community-supported 5-year planning effort from 1998 to 2003. Broadly stated, the goal of the Plan was to build on the strength of Arlandria as a pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use place through the redevelopment of underutilized sites. Re-development of the "oppurtunity sites" was the anticipated catalyst for the proposed revitalization.

We get questions from people all the time about how and where to donate things like food, furniture, books, and clothing, so we decided to put together a guide. We are still putting the finishing touches on the final document, but so many people are looking for ways to donate items now, we thought it was a good idea to publish what we have.

Field trips are critical to the success of Higher Achievement scholars. They are able to build relationships with mentors, interact with the community outside the center, and feel recognized and celebrated for their academic achievement.
