Mark your calendars! Building on the input you provide in the poll, our next step together is a Community Dialogue on Thursday, November 15, 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Activity Center, at 2932 King Street. That night, in addition to working with your fellow Alexandrians on this important issue, we’ll hear from a terrific speaker, Dr. Carolyn J. Lukensmeyer, founder and former President of America Speaks, an organization whose mission is “to reinvigorate American Democracy by engaging citizens in the public decision-making that most impacts their lives.”
In this process, we will work together to reach agreement on the principles that will guide civic engagement in Alexandria. You will first see these principles applied to decisions about growth and transportation because these issues are among our most controversial, but they will also be used to meaningfully involve Alexandrians in decisions about all of the issues facing our City.

On Tuesday September 4th, the transformation of one of Community Lodgings’ five apartment buildings will begin – a full-fledged renovation! When I took over as Executive Director seven years ago, I set a long-term goal to ensure all our families lived in safe, comfortable homes. Over the years, out of sheer financial necessity, I was forced to take a “band-aid” approach to building repairs. Seven years later, with help from HomeAid Northern Virginia, Pulte Homes and the City of Alexandria, our long-term goal becomes reality.
A few weeks ago, a small group of "civic hackers" met in a conference room at ForumOne Communications in Alexandria to discuss what kind of applications they should build as a part of the Northern Virginia Brigade of Code for America.
