Long Range Educational Facilities Update

The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) says that finding a specific location in the home where children can study helps make homework time more successful and more consistent. Many children living in Brent Place Apartments (located in Alexandria's West End) do not have a place to study in their apartments.

What Is The Child and Family Network Centers?

For more than 25 years, The Child and Family Network Centers has been working to prevent at-risk children from failing out of school. The CFNC belives that the success of students starts at a young age and therefore provides a free and fully accredited preschool for poverty stricken families in Northern Virginia. Currently over 200 children and families receive support from The Child and Family Network Centers throughout there six sites in Alexandria and Arlington.

What Is the Concerned Citizens Network of Alexandria?

The Concerned Citizens Network of Alexandria has an extensive vision to create “A model community where all stakeholders contribute to student education and to the opportunity for every student to realize their individual potential.” To one day reach this vision, the CCNA works to reduce dropout rates, increase student achievement levels, change impact from a “risk” to a “promise”, develop partnerships among all communities and increase the number of students transitioning from high school into higher education or career paths in the Alexandria City Public Schools. These efforts are in part with other nonprofit organizations, local government and businesses, faith based organization and educators.

Come visit with representatives from many of the area preschools face to face and find the perfect educational opportunity for your child. Attending preschools will have a table set up with information about their school and parents will circulate in an open-house fashion. All parents are welcome and admission is free.

But it is Quintango's charitable contributions, that make it extraordinary as it teaches tango to Alexandria schools and at-risk youth through its many workshops.

What is The Art League?

Established in 1954, the Art League, a nonprofit organization located in Alexandria, serves as a top charitable and educational facility. Teaching about 7,000 students every year through engaging classes, extraordinary exhibitions, and an artistic environment, The Art League introduces or furthers a person's expertise in art. Furthermore, it enriches the community by sharing its visual arts.

Help Alexandria kids start off the school year with the right tools and a big smile on ther faces by donating school supplies in bins at many local businesses around town.

Community Partners for Children (CPC) are running their annual school supply drive to help school age children of all ages in need. You can donate any of the following at participating locations: composition books, spiral notebooks, wide-rule notebook paper, pens, pencils, crayons, erasers, scissors, rulers and other items.

Want to learn to dance like George Washington? Intrigued by the wonders of "modern" science? Then come to Gadsby's Tavern Museum's free opne house - Tavern Day! Experience Alexandria's five-star hotel of the 18th century, made famous by John Gadsby, whose guests included George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. Tours are led by costumed guides.

Higher Achievement needs help this upcoming semester. Study Hall Aides help middle school students complete homework each afternoon while mentoring and building relationships based on trust and academic successes.

Come celebrate the African American men and women who fought for our country at this annual event. Our program will be featuring speakers, music, and dramatic presentations. This free event is sponsored by the Alexandria Black History Museum and the Alexandria Branch of the NAACP.

This week, help The Art League raise $2,500 for the creative materials critical to the success of the award-winning SOHO mentoring program.

For most of us, having our own room with our own furniture as a child is normal. For girls in the Art League's  Space of Her Own (SOHO) program, it’s not.

Neighborhood businesses, churches, community centers and libraries have a drop-off spot just waiting for you to bring supplies for students from lower-income families.

Partner with a Higher Achievement staff member to lead groups of scholars in Brain-Quest, Math Bowl or Field Game competitions. Various shifts including: Morning session – 9:00-11:30am, Lunch – 12:30-1:15pm, Afternoon session – 12:45-2:45pm. Competition held at George Washington Middle School at 1005 Mount Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA 22301-1707

Can you help a homeless mother keep her job by helping us provide transportation for her children?  The Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless needs 5-10 volunteers to take turns picking up children from summer school through the months of July and August. Schools get out at 11:00, 12:00, and 12:30, respectively.
